“Steeling” Fashion (Part 4) with Nicole Wrightson

I would like you to meet our final model Nicole Wrightson. I met Nicole when she was a young girl playing on the monkey bars behind the school that I used to work at, when I was a glorified babysitter. Fast forwarding to the present, I saw Nicole at a Pacific Athletic Club event where my wife Melanie was one of the hair stylist from L Salon performing mini hair make overs to the guests. I contacted her shorty after the event to see if she wanted to model in our fashion photo shoot and she was more then willing to be apart of it. Each model faced some kind of obstacle during the shoot and poor Nicole’s was the cold weather. She froze the entire shoot but acted like it was no big deal and pushed through those goose bumps and we were able to create some incredible photos of her.

Introducing Jordan Issa the third of our four models. A few months back Jordan mentioned to our Office Manager Karla, if we ever needed models that she would be more then happy to join the team. Jordan had the perfect look for our “steeling” fashion photo shoot, so we contacted her immediately when we had this idea in mind. Jordan was the first of the four girls to have her pictures taken outside, mind you it seemed like it was the coldest day of the year in San Mateo. Jordan never complained and had an awesome attitude throughout the entire session. The lighting was amazing and I captured some incredible shots of her all the while she was really fun to work with. Check out the end result of Jordan’s photo shoot.

I would like to introduce you to the second of our four models, Lauren Rodenberg. Lauren started on our set as Lauren Sunseri and recently married a cousin of Karla, our Office Manager. In the midst of her wedding planning Lauren was so excited to be a part of the photo shoot and seemed to enjoy every minute of it. We were very impressed with Lauren’s skills on the set especially when she was balancing on an old drawer that was barely attached to the cabinet, the fear never shown on her face check out the pictures and see for yourself.

"Steeling" Fashion with Audrey Proulx

For a while I have been wanting to work on a photo shoot with my wife Melanie (Melanie's a hair stylist with some mad skills at L Salon and Color Group), and not too long ago I had the opportunity to do so. What you'll see in this blog came together with the help of many people. Karla, our Office Manager who joined our team towards the end of January, found clothing stylist Kelly Shouey, helped in our model hunt (one of which you will meet today), and arranged countless other details.

Originally our fashion shoot was to be outside, but the weather was horrible and with only a week before the shoot it was evident we needed a backup location. I didn't want to photograph everyone in our studio, I wanted a unique location, so after driving around I ended up at "San Mateo Artistic Iron Works" and loved the look of the place. Lui Manzon Jr., Owner of San Mateo Artistic Iron Works, agreed to let us use his shop as our studio and it couldn't have been a more perfect place, as you will see.

In this blog I want to introduce you to one of our four models, Audrey Proulx. I met Audrey about a week and a half before the photo shoot, pitched the concept to her, and she eager to get right on board with us. Audrey, the youngest model on set, was our first dare devil to jump on top of the metal work benches, balance on anvils, hammers, and anything else in the shop. She wasn't even afraid to lean against the thin glass windows to get "the shot."

Last week our dear friends, Ben and Michele, moved from San Francisco back to Denver Colorado. Their time here seemed to fly by and even though we wish they could have stayed here longer, we know they had to move on to the next part of their life's journey. Ben and Michele you will be truly missed by us.

Before they left I asked Ben if I could photograph him around San Francisco. I didn't want to just document Ben's day around San Francisco, because being the drummer for The Fray, he has had a lot of great photos taken like that. In fact, the book The Fray: There and Back by photographer Rod Blackhurst is pretty cool book showing a behind the scenes look at The Fray's journey.

With that being said I wanted to photograph Ben with more of a portrait look. The following images are what was created. I hope you enjoy the photos!

Abolitionist in the Round

A friend of mine put together a concert in San Francisco with a number of other musicians and they called it "Abolitionist in the Round". The concert helped raise money to donate to the organization Not For Sale, an organization dedicated to put an end to modern slavery (human sex trafficking). Phil Wickham Concert at CPC Live

A little while back I photographed Phil Wickham at a concert he was performing at for CPC Live. When I met him before the concert began, to take photos of him and the VIPs that were attending the show, he was very chill and easy to speak with. I didn't know what to expect from his concert because I hadn't really listened to his music. With that being said, I really enjoyed his concert and was deeply moved by the songs he was singing. The lyrics to his songs were very refreshing to my soul.

If you haven't heard any songs by Phil Wickham, you may just end up buying a few of them.

Chris and Conrad opened for Phil Wickham and they were fun to watch as well.

Weekend in the Napa Valley

Ever since I was a little boy I have always loved spending time in the Napa Valley, in particular St. Helena. My fondness for it comes from the fact that my father's parents grew up in the Napa Valley. Both my grandfather and grandmother was raised in St Helena and graduated from St Helena High School, one of the coolest looking high schools I have seen. In fact, most of, if not all of my father's family is buried in the St. Helena cemetery. My great grandfather was a Sheriff in Napa and my great grandmother was an elementary school teacher. I grew up hearing stories from my grandfather and great uncle about the "adventures" they had as kids in St Helena. To this day I enjoy listening to the stories my father tells about the times he spent on my aunt's ranch, and his stories about hunting and motorcycle riding all throughout Napa and the surrounding areas.

During my childhood summers I was practically raised at Lake Berryessa. My first driving lessons, before I was old enough to drive legally, were on my grandmother's property where she was raised. My first driving accident was on the same property. . . I turned too tight while driving through a field and dented the side of my grandfather's van on an old tree stump. I even earned how to drive a stick shift in a dump truck in St Helena.

Well, not to long ago my wife and I drove up to St Helena and spent the weekend there, and these were some of the photos from our time there.

I hope you enjoy them.

On our way home we drove through Yountville, another cute town in the Napa Valley.

Tan Wedding

I've lived in California my whole life, all 33 years of it. Sadly enough, I really haven't explored many of the treasures that can be found within the Golden State. Don't get me wrong, I've been to many parts of California, but there is so much more to see. Take the city of Carmel for instance. Carmel by the Sea is only about 5 minutes south of Monterey (a city I've been to many times), but it wasn't until this last year that I actually went there for the first time. If it were not for Leon and Cheryl having their wedding in Carmel, who knows when I would have gone there.

Below are some of the photos from Leon and Cheryl's wedding. A quick note, the Tan's were married at Mission Ranch, owned by actor Clint Eastwood. We were hoping he would stop by and have a dance with Cheryl, but I guess he wasn't in town.

Cheryl looked beautiful, as you will see, and Leon brought his Singapore style to complement. Thank you for the privilege to photography your wedding.

Partying with the Papageorge Family

I love the Greek culture. Every now and then my wife and I say if we could choose one culture to be born into it would be the Greek culture. If you have no clue what I am talking about, go to a Greek festival, or spend time around some Greek families. We love the friendliness of the people, the food, the music, and the dancing (not that I have any skills in this area, but I enjoy participating and watching it).

With all that being said, I was so glad the Papageorge family contacted me to photograph Petros and Nicole's wedding rehearsal dinner. The rehearsal dinner could not have been held on a more fitting property in Atherton. I started off photographing family portraits then captured the night as it unfolded.

Kucera Sisters

Ariat is company I had the privilege of working with a lot last year. I photographed well over a thousand items for them consisting of boots, belts, bags, hats, gloves, shirts, and a number of other products they sell. Even though their focus is "performance footwear and apparel brand for equestrian athletes," they have a casual line of shoes that can be found in stores such as Nordstroms, and they have motorcycle and work boots as well. On one of the photo shoots I met Kirsty who was modeling Ariat's breeches. Towards the end of the shoot I expressed my interest in wanting to photograph horses, so she invited me to her ranch to photograph her horses. The Fray - Concert at Shoreline

What can I say, I simply love the guys from the Fray. I remember the first concert they were kind enough to let me photograph. They were playing a show at Slims in San Francisco with Mat Kearney and Carey Brothers. Within a year of touring and making appearances at San Francisco's Fillmore and Warfield theatres they landed on the stage of the Shoreline amphitheatre. Who does that? Who plays at Slims at the beginning of the year and a year later headlines at Shoreline?

Well, I wasn't able to photograph that first Shoreline concert as I was waterskiing at a friends bachelor party, but I had my chance back in August, and it was worth the wait. They played a great show. Thank you Isaac, Joe, Dave, and especially Ben for the freedom to move around without being harrassed by security.

Melanie and I had a great time during Leon and Cheryl's engagement session. We started down by the Ferry Building in San Francisco, then made our way towards Crissy Fields so Leon could bust out his Superman shirt and show off his flying abilities. We wrapped up the session in style as our sunlight slipped into the ocean.

Rock Springs Wyoming

This last summer my wife and I drove to her hometown of Rock Springs, Wyoming to visit her family. Whenever we go there I bring my camera, it's like a toothbrush - you don't travel without one.

Unlike the previous trips I had a couple goals on this one.
1. I wanted to create some portraits in an industrial setting since Rock Springs main businesses are mining and oil/natural gas.

2. I wanted to capture scenery photos while everyone was lighting fireworks on the 4th of July.
3. I also wanted to drive outside of the town to photograph some of the surrounding landscape.

So,
1. I found a train yard with some train cars laying on their sides to work as a setting for some photographs of my wife's sister and a friend. Thank you Chanci and Liz for being our models.
2. I put down the lighter and fireworks just long enough to photograph other people blowing things up.
3. Melanie's uncle asked me around 10pm at a BBQ (one of the things I love about our trips - BBQ just about every night) if I wanted to get up at 5am and go for a drive to an area that has some beautiful views. . . needless to say I couldn't pass that up. Thank you Uncle Larry!

Kelly's 35th Wedding Anniversary

I had the wonderful privilege of attend both of my grandparent's 50 year wedding anniversaries. What great examples they were of displaying love and commitment to younger generations. Recently I had opportunity to photograph the 35th wedding anniversary party of Brian and Janis Kelly. It was held at their lovely home and hosted by their children who prepared all the food for roughly 40 people.

Peter and Jessica Lu's Wedding

Peter and Jessica had a very relaxed wedding. . . it was great. Here's a little story to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

I rolled up on the scene as make-up artist Camille Monique was applying some finishing touches to Jessica. Peter was at the house where Jessica and her bridesmaids were getting ready. After I took some photos at the house of the two of them we headed on over to the church. While I was taking photos of Jessica at the church I wanted to have Peter join in some of the photos, but when I went to get him he was having his hair cut . . . on his wedding day . . . right there in a room at the church. I thought it was so funny, who does that? Not only that, but who brings scissors to a wedding? Most people are a little stressed on their wedding day. . . not Peter. Later I found out that Peter's friend is a Master Hair Stylist in Beverly Hills.

Peter and Jessica's Engagement

The San Francisco Bay Area is filled with so many beautiful locations for photography. All within 30 minutes from my Burlingame Studio I can be creating art in San Francisco at Baker Beach with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, or in a field surrounded by waist high grass, or amongst the stone columns and arches at the Stanford University in Palo Alto.

Creepy Places

Every now and then I stumble across what I call a real gem, a diamond in the rough. A location perfect for a fashion shoot, a scary movie, or an ultimate dare (spending one night alone in this place).

This old building was once a school with happy little kids, but now it seemed like it has become a local dump. The inside was completely bizarre. You'll see what I mean by looking at these photos.

Burlingame Family Portraits with the Rossi Family

I was first introduced to this location about 20 years ago by my mom, who is a photographer as well. She is the visionary behind Dorothy Meyer Photography. It's funny, I used to come here to assist her on her portraits. I would change her lenses, hold the reflector, straighten out client's clothes, make the kids laugh, and load her film (yes, I learned photography "back in the day" with film cameras, on a Hasselblaud 501CM and a Maymia RB).

Everytime I go to a location I have been to before I try to find new areas within it to use for backdrops. On this occasion I had the opportunity to photograph the Rossi family here. The Rossi's were truly a pleasure to photograph and I thought the photographs turned out great.

Brian Wedding at the Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii

Last year I had the opportunity to fly out to the Big Island of Hawaii to photograph the wedding of an absolutely wonderful couple, Che and Monica Brian. Their wedding wedding took place along the Kohala Coast on the beautiful grounds of the Fairmont Orchid, http://www.fairmont.com/Orchid/

As the sun kissed the horizon during their ceremony to bring fresh light to another part of the world, it was a visual symbol of their two separate lives fading away and becoming one life together. Here is a glimpse into their wedding day. Enjoy.

Tan Proposal

Being that I have not posted any images from Leon and Cheryl Tan's proposal, engagement session, or their wedding, the next three posts will be dedicated just to them.

My Journey began with them at Sea Cloud Park in Foster City. Leon asked me if I would take some undercover photos of him proposing to Cheryl. How could I pass up an opportunity to take some stealth photos, not to mention witness a beautiful moment between two wonderful people.

After we scouted where Leon was going to propose we headed back to Cheryl's condo and waited for her to arrive. When she was pulling up in the driveway, Leon showed me what I would describe as a secret passage that led to the back outside of the building. . . now it really felt like a top secret mission.

I made my way undetected to the park, situated myself, and waited for them to arrive so Leon could pop the question. Way to go Leon, you're the man!
